The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may be the hinge formed just while watching ear, where the upper skull (temporal) minimizing jaw (mandible) bones connect. TMJ dysfunction, an irritation or problems for the TM joint, is a very common medical problem, affecting almost 720 million people worldwide. It also creates a quantity of troublesome effects, including pain, throbbing, joint “popping,” and general discomfort. Treatments, though, are accessible, so there isn’t any reason anyone should suffer. Specialists give a number of different TMJ treatment options, with the idea to diminish the symptoms or to relieve them entirely.

1. Jaw rest. The most typical of the TMJ treatment options may be the simplest, relaxing the jaw to avoid further irritation, and just about all specialists will recommend this to start. The TM joint is among the most overused within your body – we rely on it for chewing, talking, and yawning, amongst other things, meaning it gets little rest. Resting the TM joint may contain adopting a soft diet, including cooked fruit and veggies, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and yogurt. Chewing gum, ice, and hard candy are not recommended. And when you are feeling you must eat food that needs to be chewed, work in small pieces, so you won’t have to spread out your jaw as wide.

2. Medications. Many Western medical practitioners depend on traditional measures, such as prescribing medications to dull the pain (i.e. aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) in order to relax the jaw (i.e. Valium, Celestone, etc.), thereby relieving the irritation and pain from the stressed joint.

3. Stretching Exercises. A TMJ specialist, such as a dentist or a physiotherapist, can prepare some stretches that will help you relax while you’re awake, thereby allowing the body to correct and rebuild the muscles along with other structures in the jaw and, specifically, at the joint. Massage and electrical stimulation may also decrease the pain while increasing the plethora of motion of the joint.

4. Hot and cold. Heat and/or ice pack therapies work well for sudden flare-ups from the condition, and they also do well along with massage therapy, an alternate treatment. Both cold and hot can shrink the swelling of the tissues round the joint and prevent the muscle spasms, allowing the joint to relax.

5. Bite Plates. In dentistry, a common TMJ treatments are using splints or bite plates inserted for a short period of your time. Commonly known as “night guards,” even though they may be worn during the day, the splints fit between your upper and lower teeth, keeping one’s teeth apart. That way they help reduce grinding and clenching (referred to as bruxism) and, consequently, can relieve muscle tension and pain. These are not employed for a prolonged period so you don’t cause any permanent alterations in the dwelling of the teeth or the jaw. When the teeth or even the bone beneath them have to be moved or reshaped, orthodontia are usually necesary.

6. Surgery. In severe cases of TMJ dysfunction, a doctor, such as a maxillofacial surgeon may recommend arthroscopic surgery, including ligament tightening or joint replacement. However, conclusive results of successful TMJ surgeries are few in number, and people who are available don’t provide evidence of long-term respite from pain. Some patients find that the pain actually increases after surgery, but others who have had a lot of failed interventions find that surgery provides the only help.

Two possible alternative remedies are:

1. Biofeedback. This technique teaches you to manage involuntary processes, such as muscle tension. Since one of the reasons for TMJ pain is muscle tension, by learning to relax and to control that tension, you can control TMJ pain.

2. Yoga. This method, using its focus on breathing control techniques, is another sensible choice.

Remember – you should get another opinion before you make a choice about which of the TMJ treatment options your doctor recommends. Make sure you understand all the options available to you, along with the benefits and risks of each.

TMJ is typical, but there are a number of TMJ treatment options, both traditional and alternative, realistically work. You will find the capability to lower your pain, discomfort, and stress, and to live a happier, more comfortable, and much more productive life.
